Bender Drills

① Wall Drill
② Plane Board
⓷ Towel Swings

*************
Hello! Hope everyone's day is going great.
Golf is a hard game, and your swing can feel very different depending on how you feel that day.
Even though nourishing and trusting your "feel" is important, I find it very valuable to understand the "technique" or the science part of a golf swing in order to put me in a good spot when I feel a little lost with my swing.
Therefore, I am showing you guys 3 drills that I love to do just to bring me back to the baseline when I feel like something is off. These 3 drills give me confidence that I need, and I would love to hear from you what other kinds of drills work for you!

1. Wall Drill
Just so you know, I got the first two drills from working with Mike Bender.
You set up to a wall with your butt touching the wall. When you take your backswing, you should not hit the wall, and come to the top of your swing. Your hands should touch the wall at the top, and this creates "depth" in your swing. Depth is the space you create horizontally at the top of your swing with the hands. Having depth allows you to have space in the downswing to come from the inside. Think about it - if you don't have depth, that club can only come straight down, making it really hard to swing in-to-out. When I do this, my hands don't really touch the wall, even though I try my best to get my hands deep as possible. I would rather maintain my spine angle; if I try touching the wall with my hands, I am worried that I will come up from my posture, which is a bigger problem. I usually use an iron then my driver when doing this drill. Check out the picture above to see what it's like!
You can also work on your downswing when you don't swing with a club. Just make sure your butt/hip is touching the wall throughout the entire swing. If it's coming off the wall, your probably coming up too early in swing!

2. Planeboard
Mike has this board in his academy that I absolutely love! You can adjust it to your plane; your plane should be your club extended at set up. You swing along this board that is set up for your plane, but this is the tricky part - It's not like the club is touching the board the entire time. So this board is most important from hip to hip (so through impact). When you take the club back, the shaft should be touching the wall until hip high, then it leaves the board to your hands can travel up in response to turning your shoulders and folding the arms up. Then, on the downswing, the clubhead touches the board all the way through impact, then the shaft should be touching the board fully hip high post impact. It is really difficult to explain the "how to" for the planeboard, because you need to understand the swing in order to use it efficiently. But maybe understanding that there is one underlying plane will help your game, too.

There is another way to set the planeboard up without having have to get a massive board that also adjusts to your specific plane, and I call it the portable planeboard. I use it when I am not at the academy or travelling.

I will explain how to set it up in another post because this one is getting a little long!

3. Towel Swing
Tie one end of a towel, and swing. That's it - it helps you feel the know throughout the swing, and I think it helps you feel out your tempo and being more aware of where the clubhead is in your golf swing. The knot is supposed to be the club head; it makes you realize how the club is travelling, and I really like this, because sometimes I forget that the purpose of a golf swing is to deliver that "clubhead," and not the club.

How did you like the three drills? I hope you like it!

As mentioned, I got the first two drills from Mike Bender.
