Working on My Tempo

"Tempo," or the rhythm of a swing, is probably one of the most important components of an efficient, repetitive swing.

I usually have 3 things I am working on my swing. "Tempo" is one of them right now, and it's been on my technique priority throughout my entire career.

For example, look at these two swings below.

All swing positions are relatively similar, but you can see how the first one has a longer pause at the top, whereas the second swing rushes into the downswing. I have noticed that I have a tendency to rush into my downswing when I am in a nervous situation or when my intention is result-oriented (Ex: I want to hit it close, I want to hit if far.) versus process-oriented (Ex: I want to give it a good swing. Focus on tempo.) I am especially careful on par 3's where my intention tends to drift towards the outcome.

When I rush into my downswing, I lose the opportunity to initiate the downswing with my legs which turns the swing a lot more hands/arms controlled than I would want.

To work on my tempo, I usually use a metronome app on my phone or swing a towel with a knot.

I use this metronome below on my phone for practice.

My tempo is at 95 with this app, and my goal is to complete each position per each "beep." For me, the positions are the start of the backswing, top of the swing, impact (this is a natural progression), and the finish. I know some coaches use the beeps differently, but I think all works, as long as you're doing it consistently.
